The developer behind Eve Online, CCP Games, made headlines on Thursday with a major announcement. CCP Games revealed that their previously known Project Awakening will be launched as Eve Frontier, a survival-focused blockchain game. The game will be built on the Ethereum ecosystem, making use of the leading altcoin’s infrastructure.
CCP Games Launches Eve Frontier and Issues Altcoin!
Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, founder and CEO of CCP Games, stated earlier this year that Eve Frontier is an on-chain space simulation game, where players can shape and expand the universe as they see fit. Players will either need to cooperate or face certain doom in the game’s challenging environment.
In addition to the rebranding announcement, CCP Games disclosed that Eve Frontier is being built on the Ethereum network. The game will feature multiple crypto altcoins issued under Ethereum’s ERC-20 token standard. The project is being developed on Redstone, a layer-2 network for on-chain autonomous game worlds, which is based on Optimism technology. EVE Token will be minted on Ethereum and serve as a utility token. There will also be LUX Token, which will be used for in-game transactions.
Eve Frontier: What You Need to Know
CCP Games shared that players and alliances will have the ability to create their own currencies within the game. Tokens will serve as a way to reward and support developers contributing to the game world. Eve Frontier is being developed using CCP’s proprietary Carbon game engine, which will be open source. Additionally, the game will integrate MUD, an on-chain game engine developed by Lattice, which also contributes to Redstone.
Players and developers will use Ethereum’s Solidity language to program in-game functionalities via smart contracts and link them to decentralized applications (dapps). CCP refers to this system as “Smart Assemblies,” forming the core of the sandbox-style universe. The community will then have the freedom to build and expand the game world as they see fit.
Beta Testing Begins on September 27
According to Lattice, Eve Frontier will launch its next closed beta game test on September 27. The official trailer on YouTube also teases that “founder access” will be available soon for both PC and Mac.
