The crypto investment industry endured brutal losses during the final week of 2022, with both institutional and retail investors withdrawing $795 million from digital asset products.
According to CoinShares’ most recent report, this marks the third week in a row of outflows, bringing total withdrawals to $7.2 billion since early February 2025. This downturn has almost erased gains earned earlier in the year, and net inflows for 2025 have now plunged to just $165 million.
A lot of this negativity can be blamed on renewed global trade tensions. The recent stepped-up tariffs between the United States and China were a negative, which added pressure to risk markets. Both countries slapped a 25% tax on imports, causing wider caution among investors.
President Trump’s 90-day suspension of broader tariffs may help, but the damage to market confidence seems to have already cut deep.
Ethereum and Bitcoin Take The Brunt Of Outflows; Altcoins Fall In Line
Bitcoin-based products were the worst hit, suffering $751 million in outflows. It far exceeds any other asset class in the report. Regardless of that dip, Bitcoin continues to boast $545 million in year-to-date inflows. This quarter, major fund providers like Grayscale, Fidelity, and BlackRock also saw their holdings drastically reduced.
Interestingly, short Bitcoin products suffered $4.6 million in outflows as well, suggesting investors were not merely rotating into bearish positions but removing exposure entirely.
Ethereum came next with $37.6 million of outflows, the second-largest. Other altcoins lost money too: Solana $5.1 million, Aave $780,000, and Sui $580,000.
XRP Sees Consistent Inflows Amidst Widespread Exodus
In contrast to most of the digital assets, XRP managed to undermine the bearish trend with $3.5 million worth of inflows in the same time frame. The development has resulted in year-to-date XRP inflows totaling $176 million, making it one of the best-performing digital assets in 2025.
There are several catalysts that are driving XRP’s relative strength. These consist of a rekindled optimism over regulatory clarity in the United States and speculation on the approval of a spot XRP ETF. Another one that attracted new capital was Teucrium’s 2x Long Daily XRP ETF (XXRP), which recently launched and is meant to provide 2x the daily return of XRP.
Enthusiasm has been bolstered by legal progress for Ripple against the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. CEO Brad Garlinghouse alluded to constructive discussions with the SEC, and industry analysts anticipate a favorable resolution for Ripple that could establish a precedent for how other cryptocurrencies are classified.

XRP Continues to Be a Solid Performer
And while major cryptocurrencies are struggling against global macroeconomic uncertainty and U.S.-China tariff policies, XRP’s ongoing inflow suggests increased institutional appeal. The increase in investor interest for XRP seems to be structural, with new developments surrounding the lawsuit, as well as new products like leveraged ETFs.
As such, this deviation from the wider market trend indicates that XRP might still be profiting from capital rotation, particularly as investors seek exposure to assets less correlated with Bitcoin and Ethereum volatility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Now, why have crypto funds seen $795 million in outflows recently?
Persistent U.S.–China tariff strains and global economic uncertainty led investors to back off, resulting in broad outflows from major crypto investment vehicles.
2. What is causing XRP to rise while other cryptoassets plummet?
The only reason investors are bringing XRP to exchanges is optimism regarding the approval of an ETF in the future, amid positive regulatory headlines, including major developments in Ripple’s lawsuit with the SEC.
3. What threat do these crypto fund outflows place on investors?
More outflows from funds suggest a loss of market confidence and lead to short-term further volatility and price declines, potentially highlighting the reluctance of institutions to re-enter the market.
4. But, with the market under pressure, what opportunities might lie ahead for XRP?
The accumulating institutional interest, the recent developments around the exchange-traded fund (ETF), as well as possible regulatory unambiguity, could help XRP maintain a higher price, as well as give long-term investors more confidence.
